Stakeholder Consultation for Finalization of the National Plan of Action for Conservation and Management of Sharks in India was held in Kochi on 19 February 2024. The Workshop was being jointly organized by BOBP-IGO and NFDB at the behest of the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India. As you are aware, Sharks (including true shark-related species) are vital components of marine ecosystems as well as a commercially important fishery. However, they are vulnerable to various anthropogenic actions and climate change. Recognizing this, the global community adopted the International Plan of Action for Conservation and Management of Sharks (IPOA-Sharks) in 1999 under the aegis of the Food and Agriculture Organization. IPOA-Sharks advocates that every concerned country should have a National Plan of Action for Conservation and Management of Sharks (NPOA-Sharks).
