The Government of India took Sagar Parikrama Yatra initiative to better understand the issues, experiences, and aspirations of fishermen, as well as to understand the circumstances in fishing villages and highlight the schemes available to fishermen in coastal areas. A distance of 4125 km has been covered across 9 states/union territories. The Yatra started from Goa Mandvi on March 5, 2022. On 30th August 2023, the Sagar Parikrama team started on from Vizhinjam, Kerala headed by Shri. Parshottam Khodabhai Rupala, honourable minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India, officials from National Fisheries Development Board along with the Department of Fisheries, Government of Kerala, Government of Tamil Nadu, Indian Coast Guard, and fishermen representatives covered Muthalapozhy Fishing Harbour, Vizhinjam Fishing Harbour and CMFRI Centre and moved along the coast to Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu.
