The SIFFS Sea Safety programme has evolved by researching the needs of the small scale fishermen, researching the technological options available and developing a set of practices and putting together a safety kit that is suitable and affordable to small scale fishermen. Both the practices and equipment require frequent review and revision in view of changing needs and availability of new products.
SIFFS has undertaken two major awareness campaigns in Tamil Nadu. The first was funded by the EU, targetting two districts, Nagai and Cuddalore and the second, the Tamil Nadu Sea Safety Project, a campaign funded by Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department, Government of Tamil Nadu under ADB/TEAP, for all the maritime districts of Tamil Nadu.SIFFS has also undertaken an analysis ofmarine accidents in the small scale fishery of Tamil Nadu titled Risks and Dangers in the Small Scale Fishery of Tamil Nadu
All of SIFFS sea safety activities are reflected in its web portal on sea safety and additionally, an online discussion groupon sea safety actively discusses all issues concerning sea safety for fishermen in South Asia.
